Creativity in the age of GenAI

What does it mean to be creative as a designer in an age of artificial intelligence?

If we can suppose that creativity is not a unique trait of humans, but rather a skill that can be learned and improved, then AI can be a valuable tool for enhancing human creativity, rather than a threat to it.

Design by it’s nature is a creative act that aims to solve a well-understood problem with a clear intention. Something AI should be a natural fit for. Art, by contrast, does not need to serve any purpose or solve anything. We often confuse art with design, which can lead to sacrificing the meaning and value of design.

The use of AI to generate novel and useful outputs, such as images, videos, music, and text can help designers overcome some of the common challenges and limitations of human creativity, such as cognitive biases, mental blocks, and lack of inspiration.

AI is a tool in the designer’s toolbox; a creative partner, rather than a competitor. It allows designers to embrace the uncertainty and ambiguity that come with using Generative AI, and to see it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
